NYC descends into chaos as violence engulfs city
08/26/2020 // Ethan Huff // Views

It was another extremely rough weekend in New York City, to say the least.

During the three-day period between Aug. 13-15, an astounding 49 people were shot, a number five times higher than the eight who were shot during the same 72-hour period back in 2019.

Descending into what some are now describing as a war zone, NYC is fast outpacing even Chicago, which for quite some time has held the title of murder capital of America.

To date, there have already been more than 1,000 total shooting incidents in the Big Apple this year, which is double the amount of last year – and we are not even finished with summer yet.

The irony of this is that 2020 is the same year in which people are supposedly more aware than ever of the problem of violence that plagues our cities, particularly from police against black people. But who is thinking about the black people who are killing other black people, which appears to be the fastest-growing problem in NYC?

Another problem in NYC is the police officers that are being shot, including a black police officer in Queens who was shot while looking for a parking spot near his home.

"Citywide, there were at least 25 shootings that injured 31 people on Friday and Saturday, police said," a report from PIX11 explains. "Officers responded to 16 shootings on Saturday and nine on Sunday."

"At least three of those shootings happened within just blocks of each other in Coney Island, according to police," that same report added.

Crime in NYC is like it was back in the '80s and '90s

Of these shootings, seven that occurred between Friday and Sunday morning resulted in death. One of these was Priscilla Vasquez, a 25-year-old mother of three children who was reportedly shot in the back of the head by an unknown gunman in the early morning hours on Saturday while standing on a sidewalk in front of a public school.

In this particular instance, Vasquez's friends and family do not believe that she was specifically targeted, nor that she was even the intended target, especially since the gunman also appeared to fire wildly and haphazardly.

A man in Queens was also shot and killed while playing basketball during a tournament. Ironically, news reports about the incident made the suggestion that it would not have occurred at all had there been an appropriate police presence at the park.

"We've been complaining about that park forever," said nearby resident Elaine Bailey. "It's always dark. That park is notorious. It's been like that for years. It's a known drug location."

"We complain about the drug dealing," Bailey added. "Nobody does anything. This was bound to happen. If you're going to commit a crime, it's the best place to commit a crime."

In one of the worst incidents of the weekend, a total of four victims were shot at Coney Island, the youngest victim being a 27-year-old man. And once again, the tragedy could have been avoided had police been present to keep the peace.

"In June, the New York Police Department disbanded its controversial anti-crime unit – the plainclothes officers whose mission, to rid the streets of guns, once relied on a practice known as 'stop and frisk' later exposed to have disproportionately targeted innocent Blacks and Latinos," The Washington Post reported.

After this anti-crime unit was disbanded, it was replaced with so-called "community engagement" initiatives that have had the consequence of actually empowering criminals to commit more crime.

"The gun violence plaguing New York is reminiscent of the 1980s and '90s," WaPo added in its report. "Authorities have recorded about 900 shootings so far this year, up from around 500 through the beginning of August 2019."
